Sustainable Energy Floor (SEF)
The Sustainable Dance Floor (SDF) has provided us with unique experience and knowledge of harnessing energy from footsteps. In 2010, we took the next step in developing the technology for cost effective, large-scale applications. This technology can be used anywhere where large volumes of people walk, such as stadiums, airports, railway stations, shopping malls, (public) buildings and city squares. The electricity can be fed back into the grid or used to power local systems such as (LED) streetlights or information and signing systems.
A small amount of the energy can also be used to give feedback to users, e.g. by illuminating parts of the floor modules. This technology is called the Sustainable Energy Floor (SEF).
On the way to a cost effective energy system
Our target is to develop a cost effective energy system that harnesses the energy of pedestrians. Along with our suppliers and the Universities of Technology from Delft and Eindhoven in the Netherlands, SDC has advanced knowledge of energy generating floor technology using ‘human power’. The value proposition of our technology is described below.
Inspiring Renewable Energy System
The technology has great potential to realize a new renewable energy system whilst raising awareness about sustainability in a fun and inspiring way. It is an important step forward in the development of an economical energy system harnessing human power. By installing a SEF a company can clearly communicate its ambitions regarding sustainable development.
Electricity when and where you need it
Where people are, electricity is needed. The SEF can be used as a sensor to measure when people are present, and at the same time generate the electricity needed to illuminate the space around them. When nobody is using the area, the lights can be dimmed or switched off. No external source of energy or infrastructure to connect to the power grid is needed.

Contribution to an attractive (urban) environment
The Sustainable Energy Floor can contribute to a more attractive (urban) environment, by making spaces safer, more appealing and interactive. Showing a pedestrian that they generate electricity with every step will help ensure their experience of walking through a hall, station, street or any other place where the SEF is installed is a more enjoyable one. A SEF can be used to generate sound or lighting effects in a sustainable way.
Educational value
The inherent educational value of this product makes learning about technology and renewable energy fun for children, teenagers and adults alike, especially when it engages them in challenging activities like an energy battle!
The SEF encourages people to walk, instead of taking the escalator, or possibly even driving, as shown in Volkswagen’s ‘fun factor’ movie, and in this way it has health benefits too.
International exposure
